Our Name

What’s in a name?

The name Redeemer Fellowship Church is a great description of who we are. Take the word Redeemer. If you ever sit down and read the Scriptures from beginning to end, you will see that it’s all about God’s plan of redeeming his people. Right from the beginning God creates the heavens and the earth. Then he creates the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, in his own image. And the Bible says that all he created was very good. Nevertheless, when you read through this historical narrative, you see that it doesn’t take long for Adam and Eve to mess everything up, just like we would have done (if we’re being honest with ourselves). In only the third chapter of the first book of the Bible, we see Adam and Eve sin and destroy their perfect relationship with God. But God is gracious! When we follow the rest of the narrative, we see that God already has a rescue plan in place. As soon as Adam and Eve willfully disobey Him, they are rightly kicked out of God’s perfect garden. Nevertheless, though God had to discipline his children, he also left them with a wonderful promise that one day a Redeemer would come through the line of Eve and rescue God’s people. And then, the rest of the Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, go on to describe this rescue mission and tell us all about this great Redeemer. And thus, since all of the Scriptures are about our Redeemer, we wanted to name the church after Him.

The second word in our name is vitally important as well.  Jesus, our great Redeemer and hero, tells us that we are to love and serve one another the way He loved and served us. In fact, He goes so far as to say that our Fellowship, or the way we love one another, is the clearest identifying mark that we truly believe in Him (John 13). Therefore, here at Redeemer you will find a group of imperfect people trying to follow Christ as we live in fellowship (community) with one another.

And finally, we wanted “Church” in the name, because the word “church” (ekklesia) in the Scriptures is the assembly of God’s people. Church is not a building. Redeemer Fellowship actually has a wonderful building and we are thankful to God for it. Nevertheless, we’re clear that its not all about the building. The church is what you have when God’s people gather together. And that’s what we like to do at Redeemer. We love to get together and learn about our Redeemer and spend time in community (fellowship) with one another.

So there you have it - Redeemer Fellowship Church.  And by God’s grace we will live up to the name and be a gathering of God’s people (church) in fellowship with one another that revolves around our great Redeemer.
